Search. Drive. Play.

14 Jun

The title of this post basically sums up my day in three words. It began with an early wake-up call at 5 A.M. My dad was getting some new tires for his truck and he needed someone give him a ride back home after he dropped his truck off at the tire store. I was the unlucky “volunteer” for this errand, and I wasn’t exactly a happy helper running on a mere five hours of sleep. Luckily it was a short drive, so I was able to get back into bed quickly.

After wasting a few hours sleeping and watching TV, I decided that I needed to do something or else the entire day would be wasted. I quickly finished my chores and texted Jon and Kristin to see if they wanted to do anything. Kristin was stuck running errands with her mom for most of the afternoon, but Jon was able to chill. We met up at my house and spent a few hours in town. We went to the dollar store and Harbor Freight (aka the cheap tools and other random junk store) in a sad attempt to kill a few hours, looked at some interesting junk, and then decided to go back to my house to play some video games until Kristin came home. We ended up scrapping this plan and Jon went home to run a few errands while I drove my mom’s car down to the car wash. We met up later in the evening and went down to the river for a little while. I took a few sweet pics while we were down there. Check ‘em out:

Random Outhouse @ Fishing AccessWho says you can’t take a nice picture of an outhouse?!?Today was beautiful: blue skies & warm weather.

I freakin’ love this picture. The sun flare made a nice silhouette effect.

Jon really didn’t want his picture taken, but that didn’t bother me. :D

Kristin, out in the water.

So that’s it for today. It’s been pretty crazy overall but I’m just glad to be done.

Week Two: Renewed Focus

13 Jun

Tomorrow marks the beginning of the second week of Summer, and I believe it is time to refocus my efforts toward making this summer more like the one I imagined it would be rather than the summer it has been so far. I need to do whatever I can to avoid being stuck at home, alone and bored, on a perfectly good Summer day. Sure, it is the beginning of summer, but it’s the final summer– I can’t afford to waste  any days.

I know it sounds like I’m a terminal patient when I put it that way, but it’s time to face facts– this is my last summer with my friends in high school. We probably won’t see each other again after graduation for a long time, so I should make the most out of this last year at home. It’s time to live life to the fullest…

Damn, just writing that makes me feel so depressed. Acknowledging that this is the beginning of the end of a major section of my life is scary. But I need to remember the old adage: when one door closes, another opens. This section of my life is coming to an end, but a new one is beginning: adulthood.

Wait– I’m going to be an adult soon? What the hell? Did somebody just hit the freaking fast-forward button on my life?!? I’m only sixteen– I shouldn’t be moving out next year! DAMN!

The sentences above represent how part of me feels about this realization. The next few sentences below represent the other part of how I feel:

About time! I’m tired of feeling dependent upon my parents. I want to move out, start my own life, and not worry about breaking curfew. I can look after myself just fine, thanks. And college– don’t get me started there. Finally some relevant classes that will actually educate me about topics I’m interested in and will actually be useful to me later in life.

It’s difficult to be stuck at a crossroads like this. I know I can’t go back, so complaining about being where I’m at is useless. I can’t just go into the future and begin my adult life either, so dreaming about independence isn’t very productive either. I need to stay focused on the present. I’m a senior in high school. I have a year left of high school. I still have a lot of time before college. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy this year…. that’s what I need to do.

And to do that, I need to begin my senior year the right way by having an enjoyable summer vacation. It’s time to get out the list of things that I wanted to do during the summer that I created during the school year and actually do them!

Staying focused on the present, let’s recap my day: work. I woke up at 8 AM this morning, lounged around the house until the afternoon and then I had to leave for work. I worked from 2:15 PM-9:22 PM on a Sunday (it was the VIP night, so we had extended hours). It sucked. Everyone had to stay late because the restocking process wasn’t completed for two days so we had to finish it tonight. We put everything away and rushed to make sure the store was looking good so we could get the heck out of there.

I’m so tired right now… Really. I’m doing the head bob thing where you keep falling asleep in micro-sleep and then you wake up again… It’s time to go to bed.

P.S. KEEP READING AND POSTING COMMENTS :D

No more tests for awhile, thanks.

12 Jun

Yesterday may have been a pretty crappy day, but today completely sucked. Here’s the recap:

I woke up on time today and everything went smoothly. I arrived at the test center on time, and I had all of my necessary supplies (a No. 2 pencil, my calculator, my driver’s license, and my admission ticket) for the ACT when I arrived at the test center. I took special care to remember to bring my calculator with me into the testing center the first time, so I wouldn’t repeat what happened last week with the SAT. The first two tests of the ACT went pretty well. The multiple-choice writing section was easy and I finished with a few minutes of extra time. The math section was difficult in a few areas, but overall it wasn’t too difficult. The reading and science sections were the two worst areas of the ACT, in my opinion, because the information that I needed to read in order to answer the questions was so large that it was impossible to carefully read and analyze the information and then proceed to answer the questions. I managed to make it through about 75% of the reading and science tests before the test proctor announced that five minutes remained. I quickly skimmed through the information for the remaining questions and guessed as best as I could. I feel that this test would be a poor representation of my reading and science skills because of the ridiculous timing standards set by the ACT company. I’m a very skilled reader– I scored in the 96th percentile for critical reading on the PSAT– and I read at a quick-pace, but I struggled to keep pace with the ACT’s standards. 40 questions in 35 minutes may not seem that bad, but when you also have to read four long passages, it’s difficult. The science section was worse then the reading section in the “way too much information to analyze in such a short time” department, but it had absolutely nothing to do with science. Basically it required you to read various graphs and tables and the occasional “student hypothesis” and then regurgitate the information back onto the answer sheet. There was a small amount of odd scientific vocabulary used in a few questions, but nothing major. Overall, I thought these two sections were “garbage” because they required more speed then knowledge or skill out of the person taking the test.

The essay portion of the ACT was not terrible, but I don’t feel that I did as good on it as I did on the SAT’s essay. The topics used in both tests were vastly different (I won’t mention anything else about the topics beyond that– I’m prohibited from doing so) and using a similar approach to both essays may not have been the most intelligent idea. I feel that my arguments on my ACT essay were fairly weak in comparison to those that I used on the SAT. Another complaint I have about the ACT is their decision to place the essay portion of the test after the behemoth of multiple choice questions rather then before it, like the SAT. Do you really expect students to write well after sitting in a chair, filling in bubbles, and answering questions for the past three hours?

Overall, I feel like I did much better on the SAT then I did on the ACT. Both are formidable tests, but the SAT provides a better test format that allows students to accurately show their knowledge within reasonable time constraints, rather then show how good they are at guessing in a ridiculously short amount of time.

Also, I felt ridiculously uncomfortable during the ACT. My desk was of the squeaky variety, so every slight move I made caused the desk to squeak noisily. Also, the chair was tremendously uncomfortable. During the 60 minute math portion of the test, I felt as if I was sitting on lumpy gravel. The wooden seat was a flat bench of discomfort that made me squirm in an attempt to alleviate the growing pain in my buttocks. This led to more squeaks and more distractions from the ACT, which probably didn’t help my score either.

I’m glad to be done with the SAT and the ACT and all standardized college-prep tests for a few months. Taking the SAT and then the ACT on back-to-back weekends probably wasn’t the best idea, but I think my performance on both tests was above average, even with the previously complained difficulties I had on the ACT. I’m going to take a few weeks away from the college test preparation and finish reading 1984. Then I’ll go back to preparing for the tests– this time I might actually study in advance for the tests rather then just “winging it “and preparing briefly the night before.

After the test finally ended at 12:30 P.M., I rushed home to change into my work clothes and scarf down a quick sandwich before leaving again to go to work. I worked from 1:30-7:15 P.M. It wasn’t a horrible shift, but I’ve had better. A customer stayed in the store, shopping, for twenty minutes after the final closing announcement had been made and the doors locked. Finally she took her items to the cash register after being mildly heckled/”encouraged” by a manager to hurry up and leave (it was done in a more respectful and courteous way, but when you’re asked, “Are you sure I can’t I help you with anything?”, repeatedly by the same person in a completely empty store, wouldn’t you start to think, “Hey– maybe they’re closed and I should leave now.”?

After being released from the hell known as work, I sped home and flopped on the couch for a while. My sister told me that she had lost her phone the night before, and some guy called the house to let her know he had found it and wanted to give it back to her. My parents, assuming the worst, made sure that my sister did not go to meet this person alone and my dad drove her to the gas station where the stranger who had found her phone said to meet at. I tagged along for the ride because I was bored and a bit curious. The meeting place was a sketchy looking gas station on the Southside, and the guy who had Meaghan’s phone was waiting outside the building. Meaghan got out of the truck, got her phone and thanked the man, and got back in the truck. It was a simple, clean exchange and the guy was just a person trying to help someone who had lost their phone. Fortunately there are some good people out there in this world.

The deadline for this blog is fast approaching, so I must end it here. As always, thanks for reading and commenting (although page views did go WAY down today, so make sure to tell your friends about my blog too) and keep reading!

Fridays: Not As Cool When You Have The Whole Week Off.

11 Jun

Friday: the day of the week you used to anxiously wait for so you could get away from school for two glorious days and bask in your temporary freedom by making money and spending time with friends.

Well, now that summer has officially arrived and is in full swing, Fridays seem to have lost their former value. School is out for the next few months, so those seven hours of hell you used to endure five days a week are gone for a while. The weekdays don’t seem so bad during the summer, and you may find yourself wanting it to be Monday or Thursday instead of Friday (because you have Monday and Thursday off and you work on Friday). Basically, Fridays have lost their mojo that they used to have during the school year. They’re just like any other day of the week now– the phrase, “Same shit, different day,” applies now to Fridays during the summer (unless there is some super legit Friday-only event I don’t know about, of course).

That being said, today was a pretty lousy day overall. I had to be at work at 7:00 AM this morning, so I set my alarm (a seemingly rare thing to do during the summer) for 5:30 AM so I would have plenty of time to eat breakfast, shower and dress, and go to work, assuming that each of those three previously mentioned activities took a half an hour to achieve. I stayed up until around 11:00 or 11:30 P.M. last night, and waking up at 5:30 A.M. sucked. I smacked the snooze button, and rolled over for ten minutes. When it went off again, I smacked the other button to silence the alarm, anticipating that I would actually get up relatively soon. I closed my eyes for what seemed like a brief moment, and then looked at the clock. The clock read 6:26 A.M.

I instantly sprang out of bed after seeing the time, muttering a slew of obscenities while running to the bathroom so I could take the world’s fastest shower. I showered very quickly, got dressed even quicker, grabbed a Pop-Tart and a Diet Coke and ran to my car. I sped all the way to work and arrived five minutes early. That was probably the best news a clock informed me of all day until later when my watch later informed me that it was time to leave work at noon. Work was a relatively boring and painless event, aside from being forced to stand for five hours when all I wanted to do was go home and sleep. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, noon arrived and I left work. I sped home, and spent the next two hours lazily lounging around the house. The rest of the day was fairly uneventful aside from a quick trip into town with my mom, where I was allowed to drive her awesome convertible.

So today sucked, basically. I didn’t get to see my friends, and I really didn’t do much of anything. It was another uneventful day of summer vacation. I would consider using the word “wasted” when describing today, but I did make some cash today, so it wasn’t a completely unproductive day. There’s still a lot of summer left to go, so I can’t let a day like this keep me down.

Tomorrow is going to be quite hellish. I have the ACT in the morning and then work shortly after the ACT. Fortunately my work isn’t too far from where I’m taking the test, so I should make it to work on time, assuming the test doesn’t end after 1:30 P.M. because of some unforeseen delay. I doubt that will happen though, because these tests are regulated to Nazi-strict standards that require them to start at certain times and end at certain times, ensuring that there will be no delays.

Knowing my luck, something will happen. :P Anyway, wish me luck on the test. I’m going to go finish reading my Last Minute Study Guide for the ACT book and go to bed. Good night!

P.S. Keep reading and commenting everybody– I love it! Knowing that people are reading this blog keeps me motivated.

Day Six: Prediction

10 Jun

If the events of this week are any indicator of what the rest of the summer will look like, then this is going to be a buzz kill of a summer. Don’t get me wrong– Wednesday night and today were pretty fun overall, but they seem pretty disappointing in comparison to what I expected this summer would be like.

So what does that mean? Does that mean my expectations are too high to be realistically possible? Or is it simply too soon to assume what the rest of the summer will be like based on the events of a couple of days in the first week of summer?

I don’t think my expectations are too high. I believe wanting to spend time with my friends, have some fun, and make a few stupid videos is reasonable. I also wanted to avoid being stuck alone at home as much as possible, and avoid boredom at all costs.

I don’t know… I’m not sure if I really care right now either, because my mind is shutting down, ready for sleep.

Here’s a quick recap of today: I met up with Jon, Kristin, and Anne early today at 10:30 A.M. so we could all get some quality blood-filled gaming in before lunch. We briefly separated for lunch and then met up again at around 1:00 P.M. to mess around at Canyon Creek. We goofed around on the playground ’til about four, and then everyone went home (well, in Jon’s case, he went to work). It was an OK day overall, and it definitely beat Monday and Tuesday.

It’s kind of ironic that during our last summer of high school, we keep spending time at our old elementary school. It seems as if we’re on the brink of entering the adult world, getting ready to begin our individual lives, and we keep trying to avoid it by going back to where we started. Then again, not all of us are going back to Canyon Creek a lot– I am. I keep going back there… Jon has only been there once this summer and Kristin has been there twice, and I’ve been there three times in the past four days. Why do I keep going back? Am I looking for something from the past to make sense of the coming future? Or am I just trying to hold on to the past as long as possible?

WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE?!?!? AHH!!!

It’s time to get some sleep, not debate life’s random questions. Good night.

Summer Boredom Still Around, our sources say

8 Jun

Today has been better than yesterday when it comes to being bored, but not much better. I went into town today for an hour, bought a mic and a sketching kit, and then came home. I killed some time with Kristin until she had to go home in the late afternoon, and here I am now, attempting to kill more time with this blog post.

On the bright side, I did manage to get a microphone which has temporarily sated my urge to podcast on this blog. It can only capture my voice, and even then I have to shout in it. I’m planning on buying another microphone in a few weeks that will allow me to record my conversations with my friends. We’ll see how well it works in comparison to the cheapo I bought. Considering it costs six times as much, I’m hoping it will be much better.

Unfortunately, I’m currently unable to host my podcasts/recordings directly on my blog. WordPress requires its users to purchase a storage upgrade before they can post .mp3, .wav, or any other type of audio recording. I’m planning on buying the upgrade after I get the new microphone, so that way only the high-quality recordings are posted to this site.

I did make an odd test podcast today with some random beatboxing in the background that you can check out at Podbean. Here’s the link:  Test Podcast. (I’m only hosting the podcasts at Podbean because it’s a free podcasting service. I don’t plan to upload any other content aside from the pre-storage upgrade podcasts onto that website.)

I think I’m going to go do some sketching now, or maybe play some Xbox… Who knows. I have work tomorrow from Noon to 8 PM. Blerg.

Lazy Monday

7 Jun

Although summer technically began last Saturday, it didn’t truly feel like summer until today. There’s nothing like sleeping in on a Monday to remind you that summer is here. Coupled with that is an immense feeling of boredom, that there is absolutely nothing to do beside household chores, and after those are finished only the TV, video games, the Internet, and reading remain. Otherwise, you’re alone, looking for something to do, and any parent-suggested activities seem pointless or ridiculously stupid. If you aren’t alone, then you’re sharing your misery with the company of a friend, looking for a fun way to waste the day…

It seems like the real summer is a bad case of depression instead of the fun “no moment wasted” imagined summer I dreamed of weeks ago. Aside from contact with my family, the only other person I talked with today was Kristin. I feel trapped in the neighborhood even though I have a perfectly working vehicle at my disposal. I need to get motivated and make a plan of action so the rest of the summer doesn’t pass by as an endless feeling of total boredom.

What does this plan require? Well, being as I’m trying to save some money this summer for numerous items, the plan requires multiple activities that are either free or fairly inexpensive. It also requires numerous back up plans so I won’t be stuck at home, bored, on a perfectly sunny day. It mainly requires a lot of creativity and open-minded thinking. Ingenuity, imagination, and innovation…

I feel restless. The main activities of my day included surfing the web for podcasting mics, mowing the lawn, and going to my old elementary school’s basketball court to shoot some hoops with Kristin. I want to do more this summer. I want more money so I can quit drooling at podcasting equipment and just by the stuff already. I want to write about more than just how crummy my day was so this post isn’t so boring to read.

I hope you had a fun day, or at least a busy one so you weren’t also trapped in a hellish state of boredom. Thanks again for reading my blog and make sure to leave your comments and suggestions!

Day Two: Reality

6 Jun

It’s day two of the summer-long blogging session, and reality is beginning to rear its ugly head at OP13 studios. Moments ago, I remembered that I had a blog that I promised to update daily. I looked at the time and noticed that I only had an hour to make a post or I would break that promise. Luckily I am here now, writing this post, happy to not have broken that promise.

Hurrah.

Dramatic/stupid introductions aside, this is a bit tougher than first expected. If looking at microphones for podcasting had not reminded me that I needed to write a post, I might have failed in this epic quest. That’s ridiculous… already having issues on day two. Blerg.

Here’s a quick recap of the day: I went to work. That’s it, basically. Aside from today’s random family coffee & breakfast run in the morning, I’ve been either working or passing the time at home. It’s already beginning to look like an eventful summer, isn’t it?

Work, as usual, sucked. Essentially I was the only associate working on my half of the store for most of the day. I did the best that I could, considering the lack of usually available assistance, and it still didn’t really meet the minimum requirements for what should have been completed during the entire day. The sales floor wasn’t completely restocked, although I did manage to make a quick run in the back stockroom to restock two departments, and R.A.D. (Ready All Day: Sears-lingo for keeping the store neat and organized. It involves making sure the clothes on the tables are all sized and folded neatly and the racks are sized from Small to Extra Large [no love for the big people :P ].) was mediocre at best. I did my best though, so if receive any criticism about my performance, I will kindly show my acknowledgment and appreciation of said criticism with an erect middle finger in the unfortunate critic’s face. :) I’m in a jubilant mood right now, huh?

Tomorrow is going to be better. I’m off from work and the only minor annoyance is that the lawn needs to be mowed. If all chores are taken care of early, I might take a quick trip into town and buy a mic to podcast with. Who knows… I might fall victim to the longing desire to be an “average teenager” and sleep in until noon. Time will tell.

Please accept my most sincere apologies for not having uploaded any good creative content beyond my writing yet– as you can probably tell, my schedule has been fairly full during the past few days– but rest assured that I will be uploading artistic goodies soon. (A stop by the local arts & crafts store should help to get my creative juices flowing, so that will also be on my list of things to do tomorrow…) Stay patient and know that the good stuff is coming. :) I know, waiting sucks.

Thanks for reading and remember to check back daily for new posts! And leave comments too! :D

-Will

[Random note: I don't think I'm going to title every post "Day ___:". It seemed fitting for the first day, and I didn't have the motivation to think up a more creative title for today's post (perhaps it should have been called "Too lazy to think of a real title, so here goes:"?). ]

5/22/2010

23 May

Today was the Saturday from Hell. I went in to work expecting to work my scheduled 8 AM to 1 PM shift and ended up leaving work at 4 PM. Our district manager visited the store today, which meant that my regular manager was twice as jumpy as usual. As usual, work sucked. Life goes on, and the world keeps moving.

The honeymoon is over. It has been for a few months now. I can barely remember a time where I actually enjoyed work and didn’t constantly check the time to see how much longer I had to wait until I could leave.

After leaving the store today, I came home and kind of zoned for a few hours. I didn’t really do much of anything and a few hours flew by very quickly. At around 8 PM I became aware of the time once again and decided I wanted to do something tonight. I texted Jon first and then Kristin, but Kristin was the first to respond. I called her and learned that her brother was about to go out on the roof to retrieve a ball he had gotten stuck up there earlier. I ran outside to the patio and snapped a few shots of him on the roof for blackmail. :D (*evil cackle*) Here’s the pics:

Kristin, on the phone with me, and Dillon, trying to get back inside.

From a distance, to show perspective.

After he finally went back into the house, Kristin came over and we talked about random things until Jon called to let me know he was off from work and able to hang out. He came over to my house a little while later with his girlfriend, Anne, and all four of us hung out at my house just messing around until about 10 PM when Kristin had to go. Then, Anne, Jon, and I went to Denny’s after a short debate over restaurant choices. We had a great time just talking and joking and eating some delicious cinnamon treats and the sampler we ordered until around 11 PM. Then we went back to my house and killed another half hour with occasional talk and awkward silence ’til they had to go. I then spent an hour on Facebook chatting with Kelci about the horrors of work and how basically every job we could currently get right now sucks other then becoming a lifeguard at a pool. We discussed the pros and cons of life-guarding for a while, and then ranted about our crummy jobs until 1 AM rolled around and we both decided sleep would be beneficial. And now I’m here, recounting the boring events of my day to a non-existent audience. Lovely, isn’t it? ;)

Basically, the beginning of the day blew, the middle was a blur, and the end was a blast (in comparison to the earlier parts). I did, however, take a few random pictures during the middle part of the day…

A lovely picture of Stella, my kickass electric guitar.

This was simply a “right place, right time” picture. The slow shutter speed made her tongue a blur.

And this last picture is a picture of me after I finally got home from the visit to Denny’s… God bless Suki for putting up with my me and my jackass friends. She definitely earned her tip that night.

I really wanted to go to bed. Like really bad.

Thank God Summer is almost here. I can’t wait much longer to be free from school. I also cannot wait to go to sleep, so I’m going to end this blog here. Goodnight.

-Will

I’m Ready for Summer to Begin… NOW

19 May

Dear Summer,

What is the freakin’  holdup? If I have to sit through one more movie in my U.S. History class while my teacher talks on the phone, I’m going to lose it. Please send me a time machine to skip the next two weeks or just begin now. That would be great. Thanks.
- Will

Two more weeks of school left until Summer begins and the currently large waste of time, school, ends. Basically, there are two more weeks of school until freedom. :) Thank God.

What’s keeping me sane during this seemingly endless wait for Summer? Little things. Thinking about what’s coming. Going outside and enjoying the fresh air. Dreaming.

Unfortunately, I can only show you the “going outside and enjoying the fresh air” part through photography. It was nice to get out and enjoy the warm weather, blue skies and green grass. My cats were also thrilled to get outside and lay in the hot sun. I tried to read The Grapes of Wrath, the book we’re reading in my English class, but after a few pages I capitulated to the desire to take pictures instead. I also brought out my SAT prep book in the hopes of doing some studying, but alas this never occurred. Perhaps I’ll absorb its knowledge through osmosis… That would make carrying it everywhere worthwhile.

‘Twas sunny.

I love random shovels.

KITTY!

Hurrah for Color.

So much for studying…

(Random Note: I wouldn’t consider those pictures to be “world-class” photography or even somewhat good photography, but they add a nice visual to the blog, right?)

So that was my day… yesterday. It wasn’t really interesting, but it was nice nonetheless. On a more positive note, I have Friday off from work (a very rare occurrence) and I’m hoping to go stargazing again with Jon, Anne, and possibly Kristin. If the skies are clear and it’s not too cold, it should happen. I’ll post some pics and possibly a podcast/recording of our random conversations during this event if it actually occurs. The last time we recorded this was about three years ago when we were all Freshman… It’s hilarious to listen to now and we’re hoping to record some more good times like that. (Maybe I’ll post the first stargazing recording on here…. Hmm…)

Well that’s all for now folks. Look for weekly posts on Wednesdays until the Summer officially begins on June 5th*. Until next time…

-Will

* I have my SAT test on June 5th… FML.
