Tech: Laptop Setup

If you read yesterday’s blog post, then you’ll know that I bought a new laptop. One of the things I have to do when I use a computer with a fresh installation of any operating system is download all of the software I use, need, and want. I also bookmark my favorite websites on the new browser. I’ve noticed that most of the new software I install immediately on a new computer (or a new OS install) is Open Source software. Open Source software is free and is generally considered safer then “closed-source” proprietary software. Mozilla Firefox, for example, is an example of an Open Source web browser.

Here’s the software I always download:

* Mozilla Firefox: Basic web browser. Make IE look like a joke.

* Open Office: Free office productivity software. It’s basically an open-source program that’s similar to Microsoft Office, and can even open and save documents, presentations, and spreadsheets in Microsoft Office formats. It’s a definite download for people who can’t afford Microsoft Office 2010.

* VLC: It’s a basic media player. If Windows Media Player and QuickTime can’t play it, VLC probably can. VLC plays .flv videos, so you can save YouTube videos to your computer and watch them again later. It’s also free and open-source.

* Audacity: A great free, open-source recording software. You can record audio onto your computer and edit it with this software. You can also save recordings in a .mp3, .wav, .ogg, and other formats.

*iTunes: I have an iPod, so I gotta have iTunes. It’s definitely not open-source, but I always download it.

And that’s about it for software I have to download shortly after OS setup. What software do you have to install?

Now to the “blogging” part of the post…

Today sucked. I woke up 20 minutes before I had to be at work. I still managed to make it there on time, but work also sucked. We have a core compliance check on Friday, so I have to work a nine-hour shift tomorrow. My manager is leaving tomorrow for some special Sears manager training, so I’ve been abandoned with two leads and a bunch of new people. Tomorrow is going to suck.

I need to sleep. I’ve been trying to set up my laptop since I got home at 2:30 (I worked a 7 AM- 2 PM shift), and I’m still having some iTunes issues… Blerg.

I’m going to end this post here. Thanks again for reading my blog– keep reading, and look for a new post tomorrow. Comments!
